Cold wave

During the winter monsoon season, the Shan highlands and the central plains of eastern Myanmar are the most affected. During the winter monsoon season, when the high pressure region over China gradually strengthens, a ridge of air pressure from this region enters Myanmar from the northeast, causing colder temperatures at the top of the ridge.

According to the temperature criteria currently used by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, a cold wave is defined as a cold wave if the temperature drops by 7 to 8 °C below normal for 3 or more days in winter and a severe cold wave if the temperature drops by 9 °C or below for 3 or more days.
